Pet Grief and Chronic Illness Support

Supporting Caregivers Through Pet Illness and the 5 Dimensions of Pet Grief™

I’ve always loved animals. One of my earliest memories is visiting my grandpa’s farm in Kentucky when I was just two years old. Growing up in Los Angeles, that experience felt rare and meaningful—and it planted a lifelong connection to animals that continues to shape my work today.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of sharing my life with many animal companions, including cats, hamsters, rats, bunnies, birds, turtles, hermit crabs, and even a very friendly tarantula. I currently volunteer at an animal shelter and have also had the unique joy of meditating with animals at an alpaca farm. These experiences have deepened my understanding of how profoundly animals support us—often simply through their presence.

When a beloved animal is chronically ill or nearing the end of life, caregivers often find themselves living in a constant state of emotional strain—balancing hope, fear, exhaustion, and anticipatory grief. When that animal passes, the loss can feel disorienting and devastating. The bond we share with our pets is unlike any other, rooted in unconditional love, daily routines, and deep nervous-system regulation. It deserves to be honored and understood.

This is why I created the 5 Dimensions of Pet Grief™, a compassionate framework that reflects how grief and caregiving actually unfold. Rather than following a linear path, caregivers may move through moments of numbness and shock (The Fog), intense emotional waves and self-blame (The Storm), the painful silence when routines change (The Void), the process of meaning-making and reframing difficult decisions (Integration), and eventually a place where love and memory remain without overwhelming pain (Sacred Memory).

Grief looks different for each person. There is no single “right” way to grieve, care, or decide when it may be time to say goodbye. I provide gentle, holistic support for caregivers navigating long-term pet illness, end-of-life decisions, and pet loss—meeting you exactly where you are in your process.

My approach may include creating memorials, journaling, cognitive reframing, positive psychology tools, meditation, visualization, and nervous-system-aware practices. Together, we create a personalized plan to help ease emotional overwhelm, reduce guilt and self-blame, and support you as you move through grief with compassion and clarity—honoring both your pet and yourself.

If you are caring for a chronically ill pet, struggling with anticipatory grief, or navigating the loss of a beloved companion, you don’t have to do this alone.
